The Distributed Management Task Force , until 1998 the Desktop Management Task Force , is a standardization organization of companies in the IT industry .

In it, industrial manufacturers and users are organized in joint working groups to coordinate the development, adaptation and interoperability of standards for system management and initiatives for coordinating system management in corporate and Internet environments.

More than 200 companies belong to the DMTF, including AMD , CA , Cisco , Dell , EMC , Fujitsu , Hewlett-Packard , Hitachi , IBM , Intel , Microsoft , Novell , Oracle , Sun Microsystems , Symantec , WBEM Solutions .

The Common Information Model (CIM) is the most important standard of the DMTF. It regulates the exchange of information in a platform-independent and technology-neutral form. The aim is to rationalize and reduce costs when integrating different systems. The standards guarantee the interaction of products from different manufacturers without time-consuming data conversion.

DMTF standards

  • Open Virtualization Format - Standard for packaging and distributing virtual appliances or general software running in virtual machines
  • Redfish Scalable Platforms Management API (Redfish) - RESTful interface for out-of-band systems management
  • Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) - Extension of the CIM to interoperability via the Internet
  • Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) - System management standards for server hardware
  • System Management BIOS (SMBIOS) - system management at BIOS level
  • Alert Standard Format (ASF) - systems management standards for devices without an operating system
  • Directory Enabled Network (DEN) - Organization of the CIM on a directory basis
  • Desktop Management Interface (DMI) - First DMTF system management standard, is no longer developed any further
