Ditrichum gracile is a moss - kind from the family Ditrichaceae .

features

The moss usually forms loose, yellow-brown to dark green, often shiny lawns. The stems are about 4 to 11 centimeters high and mostly rhizoid-tomentose below. The leaves, which are up to 7 millimeters long, are often somewhat sickle-shaped and gradually narrowed from the egg-shaped base to a long tubular awl tip. The leaf margins are entire at the bottom and serrated at the tip. The strong rib, which extends to the tip of the leaf or protrudes, takes up about a third to a quarter of the leaf width at the base of the leaf and is barely separated from the adjacent lamina in cross section. The lamina cells are isodiametric to short-rectangular or diamond-shaped at the top, predominantly elongated in the lower third of the leaf and spotted near the rib.

The dark red seta is up to 2.5 centimeters long and more or less bent, the capsule upright to slightly inclined, dark brown, cylindrical, up to 2 millimeters long, the lid conical to short beaked. The approximately 400 µm long peristome teeth are split in two almost down to the short basement membrane. Spores are 12 to 15 µm in size and have fine papillae. The moss is diocesan . It rarely has any fruit. Brood bodies are unknown.

Location claims and distribution

Ditrichum gracile grows in mostly lime-rich, but always base-rich locations, especially on moist limestone rocks and shady limestone grasslands.

It occurs in Europe, Asia, North, Central and South America as well as New Guinea and New Zealand.

Systematics

In the past, Ditrichum gracile was not differentiated from Ditrichum flexicaule in the broader sense, but was separated from Frisvoll as an independent species in 1985.

An often used synonym is Ditrichum crispatissimum (Müll.Hal.) Paris; others are: Ditrichum flexicaule var. longifolium (JEZetterst.) I. Hagen, Ditrichum giganteum RSWilliams.

Compared to Ditrichum flexicaule , Ditrichum gracile differs in mostly greater height and longer leaves, the lamina cells, which are longer in the lower leaf section, and the dorsally not bulging leaf vein. Ditrichum gracile prefers humid and shady locations.
