The 2008/09 season of Division 1 , the second highest French ice hockey league , was won by the Rapaces de Gap , who were promoted to Ligue Magnus . The Chiefs de Deuil-Garges and the Jets de Viry-Châtillon were relegated to Division 2 .

In the main round, the 14 teams played 26 games each. The eight best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs, in which the second division champions were played. The last two placed in the main round were relegated directly to Division 2. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
