While working together, Gershwin improvised a melody; DeSylva listened for a few minutes and then started singing Do it again, do it again . The song Do It Again was first used in the Broadway play The French Doll , which premiered on February 20, 1922 at the Lyceum Theater; the song was presented by Irène Bordoni . Alice Delysia sang it at the London performance of the piece in the Mayfair and Montmartre Revue , but under the title Please Do It Again . The singer Eva Gauthier appeared in 1923 a. a. performed the Gershwin song in New York's Aeolian Hall . The song became popular in the US mainly through the recording of Paul Whiteman (Victor); Do It Again experienced some boycotts by American radio stations because of the allusive title.
