Doc Houlind

Søren "Doc" Houlind (* 1946 in Lemig ) is a Danish musician ( drums , piano , trumpet , vocals ) and band leader of old-time jazz .

Career

Houlind began performing as a drummer while still at school; In 1965 he played his debut album Soren Houlind's jazz band Playing Old Jazz . In 1971 he traveled to New Orleans for the first time , where he had lessons with Cie Frazier . In the following years he worked in the Danish and European hot jazz scene with various formations, such as the Ricardo's Jazzmen; also with American musicians guesting in Denmark and Europe such as Alton Purnell , Paul Barnes , Thomas Jefferson , Sammy Rimington , Alvin Alcorn , Fat Man Williams , Butch Thompson .

In the 1970s he led the Houlind's Kobenhavn Ragtime Band , with which he a. a. also performed at Jazzhus Montmartre and in New Orleans with Kid Thomas Valentine . In the 80s and 90s he played with Papa Bue & his Viking jazz band, Lillian Boutté , Jacques Gauthé and Bjarne "Liller" Pedersen . Between 1989 and 1995 he also directed the Jazzhus Montmartre with the clarinetist Ole Gohn. In 1998 he was a guest at the International Dixieland Festival Dresden . In 2002 Houlind founded his All Stars Band , in which the trumpet became his main instrument and made guest appearances at international festivals. His trumpet playing is influenced by role models such as Bunk Johnson , Kid Howard , Red Allen and Louis Armstrong . In the field of jazz he was involved in 78 recording sessions from 1965 to 2014.
