Dolmen on the Île Brunec
The dolmen on the Île Brunec , the northernmost of the Glénan Islands ( French Archipelago des Glénan ) south of Fouesnant in the Finistère department in Brittany in France , was excavated in 1926 by Martha and Saint-Just Péquart (1881-1944). In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).
In the 4th millennium BC A dolmen was built on what is now the island of Brunec. In addition to three orthostats , which belong to another, poorly preserved structure, 12 bearing stones and further footprints of an oval chamber and a corridor were discovered, which belong to an almost complete dolmen floor plan. The excavation showed that the cairn was already somewhat worn away. The Gangdolmen ( French Dolmen à couloir ) was classified as a Monument historique in 1992 . Other prehistoric monuments were located on the neighboring islands of Île de Bananec , Île de Drénec and Île Saint-Nicolas .
The Neolithic sea level was about 5.0 m lower than it is today and the area of the archipelago was not as much fragmented. Traces of settlement have been discovered on several islands. Eighteen former fish fences from prehistory, ancient times and the Middle Ages have been identified on the Glénan archipelago. The islands were still settled in Gallo-Roman times , as evidenced by the amphorae and coins found on the Île aux Moutons and the Île Saint-Nicolas.
