The Cathedral of Fossano or the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Juvenalis ( Italian Cattedrale di Santa Maria e San Giovenale ) is a church in Fossano in the Italian province of Cuneo in Piedmont . The cathedral of the diocese of Fossano has the status of a minor basilica from immemorabili .

history

The original collegiate church from the 13th century, proven by excavations, with a belfry from the period between 1395 and 1420 that has been preserved today, was expanded in the 15th century. With the creation of the diocese of Fossano, it was elevated to cathedral in 1592. In the 17th century, Boetto gave the tower a new, octagonal tower.

In honor of St. Juvenalis von Benevento began with the construction of the new cathedral, Bishop Morozzo, which lasted from 1778 to 1791, when it was consecrated. Since 1786 the dome has been painted and the statues and the entire decoration have been modeled. The current cathedral is the result of a major renovation that completely changed the interior of the church from 1862 to 1866, overlaying the original design with gilding, paintings, artificial marble, frames, friezes and stucco decorations.

description

The cathedral, designed by the architect Mario Ludovico Quarini, has an imposing facade made of exposed bricks in a classical style, which is impressively designed by the four giant Corinthian columns with a composite capital. The three-aisled basilica with narrow aisles and transept leads to a choir with a round apse . The vaulted ceiling including the crossing dome with its windowed drum are richly painted with frescoes . Ten chapels go off to the side. Significant paintings, including five medallions, are by Paolo Emilio. Further paintings were made by Claret and Boetto, the frescoes from the 19th century are by Luigi Hartman, Davide Ortori, Emilio Morgari and Domenico Mossello. The relics of the city's patron saint, Saint Juvenal, are also kept inside. In 1985 Quarini's baptismal font was transferred to the restored parish chapel, which is attached to the cathedral.
