The Cathedral of Monza ( Italian Duomo di Monza ) is John the Baptist ordained and was in the early 7th century. From the Bavarian-born Queen Theodolinda commissioned. The Basilica minor is thus one of the oldest churches in Lombardy .

Building history

The church was rebuilt by the Visconti after the holy year 1300 and received its present appearance with Gothic and modern elements in the course of the following centuries .

The tower was built between 1592 and 1606 and is 75 m high. It contains an eight-part chime in the beat sequence a 0 –h 0 –cis 1 –d 1 –e 1 –fis 1 –gis 1 –a 1 . The bells were cast by Bartolomeo Bozzio in 1741.

Political history

When Theudelinde died in 627, she was buried in the basilica , and the place immediately became a place of worship.

The iron crown belonging to the queen's trousseau was part of the cathedral treasure with interruptions and is now kept in the altar tabernacle in the chapel of the Theudelinde ( Cappella di Teodolinda ).

With the subjugation of the Longobard Empire in 773/774, the crown came into the hands of Charlemagne , who from then on called himself King of the Franks and King of the Longobards and put it on his son Pippin in 781 . As a result, she became the crown of Italy and several kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire became kings of Italy with her, i.e. H. Crowned Imperial Italy . Several of these coronations took place in Monza Cathedral, some in San Michele Maggiore in Pavia , others in the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio in Milan , one in Rome and the last ( Charles V ) in Bologna . It was then put on twice in Milan, Napoleon I in 1805 and Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria in 1838 . Monza Cathedral is called Duomo (cathedral) not only as the largest church in the city, but also as the coronation church of medieval (northern) Italy.

organ

The large organ was built in 2002 by the organ builder Metzler (Switzerland) in an existing organ case. The instrument has 29 registers on two manuals and a pedal.
