Domenico Massenzio (* around 1585 in Ronciglione ; † October 23, 1657 in Rome ) was an Italian composer .

Life

As a child, Massenzio received musical, practical and compositional training at San Luigi dei Francesi under Giovanni Bernardino Nanino . In 1601 he was dismissed there because of his broken voice , but returned in 1604 as a tenor . At first he probably wanted to continue his career as a singer, because in 1608 and again in 1616 he competed for a place in the Capella Pontificia - but in vain. 1610/11 he worked for a few months in the Cappella Giulia .

At the Seminario Romano , where he had studied theology since 1606 , he succeeded Giovanni Francesco Anerio as Kapellmeister in 1612 . He held the same position at the Jesuit church Il Gesù . After Massenzio had read his first mass there in September 1612, he received a canonical at the collegiate church in his hometown.

On November 16, 1619, Massenzio received a benefice to Santa Maria in Via Lata , where he found his actual position in life, most recently as dean of the collegiate chapter. This sinecure manifests itself in his extensive compositional production and its publication.
