Domingo Báñez (also Váñez or Ibáñez ; born February 29, 1528 in Medina del Campo , Old Castile ; † October 22, 1604 ibid) was a Spanish Dominican , theologian , confessor of St. Theresa of Avila .

Life

At the age of 15 he began studying philosophy at the University of Salamanca . In 1546 he converted to the Dominican monastery of St. Stephan and from 1551 taught philosophy and theology . On May 3, 1547 he became a university professor . From 1561 to 1566 Báñez was employed as a professor at the Dominican College in Ávila . Among other things, he was the confessor of St. Theresa and accompanied her as a spiritual advisor until her death in 1582. From 1567 to 1573 he was a professor at the University of Alcalá , then Regens and a professor at the Ordenskolleg St. Gregory in Valladolid and from 1577 until his retirement at the University of Salamanca .

Known for his doctrine of grace , which opposed the doctrine of Luis de Molina , Báñez was one of the leading theologians of the Thomistic neo-scholasticism of the 16th century. His views were the main points of contention between Thomism and Molinism .
