The Cathedral Treasury and Diocesan Museum is the museum of the Diocese of Osnabrück . The museum is located right next to St. Peter's Cathedral .

history

The Diocesan Museum was set up in 1918 under Bishop Wilhelm Berning , "in order to present the no longer used holdings of church art from the cathedral and the churches of the Diocese of Osnabrück in an orderly and safe manner".

Permanent exhibition

In the museum there are 500 m 2 exhibits from more than 1000 years of existence of the diocese: the cathedral treasure , the relics of the diocese saints Crispin and Crispinian from the 13th century and reliquaries , manuscripts and incunabula , paintings and graphics , sculptures, liturgical vestments and precious furniture.

The central exhibit is the cross of the cathedral chapter from the early 11th century. It is decorated with precious stones , pearls and gems . Continuously used as a processional cross throughout the ages , the canons received with him every newly elected bishop who kneeled and venerated the relic stored in the cross with a kiss .

Particularly important works are also the sculptures from the early 14th to early 16th centuries, including numerous works by the “ Master of Osnabrück ” as the best sculptor's workshop in the region in the late Middle Ages . Among the textiles, the priestly robe of Benno II of Osnabrück made of Byzantine silk from the 11th century is the main work.

The exhibition guides are:

  • the memory of Charlemagne as the founder of the diocese
  • the heyday of art in Osnabrück around 1500
  • the change between a Catholic consecrated bishop and an evangelical Guelph Prince in the country between 1648 and 1802
  • the cathedral and the diocese in the 19th and 20th centuries

Many precious pieces such as reliquary shrines, chalices or lecture crosses are still used in the cathedral services today.

Occasionally, concerts are held in the exhibition rooms.

Awards

In 2018 the museum was awarded the museum seal of approval from the Museumsverband Niedersachsen und Bremen eV.
