Don Alvarado

Don Alvarado , actually José Paige , (born November 4, 1904 in Albuquerque , New Mexico , † March 31, 1967 in Hollywood , California ) was a Mexican-American actor, assistant director and production manager.

Life

Mexican-born Don Alvarado came to Hollywood in 1922 with the aim of finding work in the film industry. He made friends there with the actor Gilbert Roland, who was also of Mexican descent , and together they began their film career. In 1924 Alvarado married the Russian-Jewish emigrant daughter Ann Boyar. In the same year, their daughter Joy Page was born, who later also became an actress and worked in Casablanca , among other places . However, Alvarado's wife left him and married the film producer Jack L. Warner .

In 1924 Alvarado had his first film appearance. Similar to Rudolph Valentino or Ramón Novarro , Latin lover was cast in various important supporting roles. He played in film productions by Raoul Walsh and David Wark Griffith , among others . With the beginning of the sound film , his appearances became smaller. He had one of his last notable roles as the lover of Marlene Dietrich in Josef von Sternberg's film drama The Devil is a Woman . After 1940 Alvarado appeared only sporadically on occasion as an actor, instead he worked mainly for Warner Brothers as an assistant director and production manager. As a production manager, he has been involved in successes such as The Treasure of the Sierra Madre , Beyond Eden and The Old Man and the Sea .

Don Alvarado died in 1967 at the age of 62 years to cancer . He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his film work .
