action

During the Carnival in southern Spain , Antonio Galvan sees the dancer Concha Perez and falls in love with her. His friend Don Pasqual tells him the story of how Concha Perez once ruined him. The officer Pasqual brought Concha from a cigarette factory, where she had to toil hard as a worker. But shortly afterwards she disappeared from his life, only to reappear three months later with a request for money. Again she starts a love affair with Pasqual, but disappears again after receiving the money. He didn't see her again until six months later when he went to a nightclub. She works there as a singer. Pasqual still loves her, but discovers that she is in a relationship with the bullfighter Morenito. He climbs after her. Concha escapes him together with the torero. Eventually Pasqual loses his military position and is discharged from the army. Morenito commits suicide because of Concha. After this story, Antonio has to swear to his friend never to get involved with Concha Perez. However, he breaks the vow and meets with Concha. When Pasqual discovers Antonio with Concha, his jealousy is rekindled. He challenges Antonio to a duel. In this duel, Antonio Pasqual is injured and is arrested by the police. Concha ensures that Antonio is released from custody. Together they want to flee to Paris by train. At the last moment, however, Concha leaves Antonio and returns to Pasqual.

The role of the duel referee was played by the British actor Lawrence Grant .

Reviews

“The film failed the criticism and met with fierce opposition because of its image of Spain; Copies were destroyed, the film disappeared into oblivion. Today we enjoy the film as a 'classic' Sternberg opus, in which the director behind the trivial surface, who incidentally also used Bunuel for This Obscure Object of Desire , reflects on the abolition of defined boundaries and roles and a fascinating game with the beautiful appearance, floating with the conscious and the unconscious. "

Awards

The film entered the competition at the Venice International Film Festival in 1935 and received an award for best cinematography.
