Don Collins (basketball player)

Donald "Don" Collins (born November 28,  1958 in Toledo , Ohio) is a retired American basketball player .

career

Collins, a 1.98-meter tall winger, played 106 games for the Washington State University team from 1976 to 1980 . The points he scored in 1563 earned him second place in the university team's eternal basket hunter list. One of the players who later overtook him was Klay Thompson . After Collins had shone in the 1979/80 season with 23.1 points per game, which elected him Atlanta Hawks  in the NBA draft process in 1980 to 18 point.

After 47 NBA games for Atlanta in the 1980/81 season (12.7 points / game) Collins was given in January 1981 in exchange for Wes Matthews to the Washington Bullets . Collins stayed in Washington until the end of the 1982/83 season. 1983/84 he was under contract with the Golden State Warriors . In 1984/85 he played eleven games for the Washington Bullets, but was mainly employed in the Continental Basketball Association  (CBA) at Lancaster Leightning (48 games: 24 points / game). Collins won the 1986 CBA championship with the Tampa Bay Windjammers, and in the 1986 summer season he joined the Tampa Bay Thrillers. 1986/87 he was employed again in the CBA and got another chance in the NBA in the same season when he played six games for the Milwaukee Bucks . In the spring 1987 USBL season, Collins played for the Tampa Bay Stars.

Collins, who at times had drug and marital problems, accepted an offer from France  in 1987 and moved to CSP Limoges . He also  made a name for himself in the Ligue Nationale de Basket as a strong attacking player who fearlessly looked for a conclusion even at crucial moments of a game. In the 1987/88 season he was with 26.2 points per game in second place on the basket hunter list of the French league, in 1988/89 with 25.9 on the seventh. Collins won the French championship title with Limoges in 1988, 1989 and 1990, the league cup "Tournoi des As" in 1988 and 1990, and in 1991 they became French runners-up. In 1988, 1989 and 1990 he was named the best foreign player in the league. At European level he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with CSP in 1988, in the final against Badalona he scored the highest score of the encounter with 28 points. Collins reached the semifinals of the European Cup in 1990 with Limoges , where they were eliminated against Jugoplastika Split, but won the game for third place against Aris Thessaloniki . He left Limoges in 1991.

From 1992 to 1994 he was under contract with the French second division club La Rochelle, from 1994 to 1996 he played with Pully Basket in the Swiss National League A , and in 1996/97 with Cossonay in Switzerland. He then continued his career in Mexico , where he stayed until 2003.
