Donald Andrew Dawson , also Don Dawson, (* 1937 ) is a Canadian mathematician who deals with probability theory.

Dawson graduated from McGill University with a bachelor's degree in 1958 and a master's degree in 1959 and received his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Henry McKean in 1963 ( Constructions of Diffusions with Specified Mean Hitting Times and Hitting Probabilities ). 1962/63 he was an engineer in the space division of Raytheon . In 1963 he was Assistant Professor and 1967 Associate Professor at McGill University and 1970 Associate Professor and 1971 Professor at Carleton University . Since 1999 he has been Professor Emeritus and since 2000 Adjunct Professor at McGill University.

From 1996 to 2000 he was director of the Fields Institute , during which time he was an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto .

Dawson deals with stochastic processes, dimensional processes, hierarchical stochastic systems with applications in information systems, genetics, evolutionary biology and economics. He worked with Jürgen Gärtner , among others , on stochastic processes of the McKean-Vlasov type.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1987) and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1977). In 2004 he received the CRM Fields PIMS Prize , the Jeffery Williams Prize in 1994 , the Max Planck Research Prize in 1996 and the gold medal of the Statistical Society of Canada in 1991, of which he has been an honorary member since 2004. From 2003 to 2005 he was President of the Bernoulli Society.

In 1994 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich (Interaction and hierarchy in measure-valued processes). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
