Donald E. White

Donald Edward White (born 1914 in Dinuba ; † November 20, 2002 in Portola Valley ) was an American geologist .

White graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree and a PhD from Princeton University . From 1939 until his retirement in 1992 he worked for the US Geological Survey . Initially he was stationed in Newfoundland, later he investigated geothermal energy and ore formation at the hot springs in Yellowstone Park . As an expert in geothermal energy and geochemistry, he was active worldwide.

White was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1973, received the Penrose Medal from the Geological Society of America in 1984 and the Penrose Gold Medal from the Society of Economic Geologists in 1992 .
