Donald Mackay, 11th Lord Reay
Donald James Mackay, 11th Lord Reay, 1st Baron Reay (born December 22, 1839 in The Hague , † August 1, 1921 in Earlston ) was a Dutch - British nobleman , politician and statesman .
Life
He came from a Dutch line of the Scottish aristocratic MacKay family . He was born in 1839 as the eldest son of Æneas Mackay, 10th Lord Reay, Baron Mackay and his wife Jonkvrouw Maria Fagel in The Hague, the Netherlands. After studying at the University of Leiden, he was a member of the Dutch Parliament from 1871 and worked in the Dutch Embassy in London.
When his father died in 1876, he succeeded him as hereditary chief of the MacKay clan and inherited the following nobility titles from him: (3rd) Baron Mackay van Ophemert en Zennewijnen (Dutch nobility, 1822); 11. Lord Reay , of Reay in the County of Caithness ( Peerage of Scotland , 1628); 11. Baronet , of Far (Baronetage of Nova Scotia, 1627).
In 1877 he took British citizenship and gave up his seat in the Dutch Parliament. On October 8, 1881, he was raised by Queen Victoria in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Baron Reay , of Durness in the County of Sutherland. A seat in the British House of Lords was associated with the title . From 1894 to 1895 he was Undersecretary of State for India and from 1895 to 1890 British Governor of Bombay .
1884 to 1886 Lord Reay was Rector of the University of St Andrews , 1893-1921 President of the Royal Asiatic Society and 1902 to 1907 President of the British Academy .
He had been married to Fanny Hasler since June 5, 1877. Since the marriage remained childless, his British baron title expired on his death in 1921. His other titles fell to his cousin Eric Mackay .
