Donald Rabindranauth Ramotar (born October 22, 1950 in Caria Caria , Essequibo Islands-West Demerara ) is a Guyanese politician . He was President of Guyana from December 2011 to May 2015 .

Life

Donald Ramotar was born into a large family of Indian descent in the remote village of Caria Caria on the lower Essequibo .

He studied economics at the University of Guyana and in Moscow and went through the following professional positions:

  • 1966 to 1975: Employee in an import-export company belonging to the People's Progressive Party (PPP)
  • 1975 to 1983: Managing Director of the party headquarters of the PPP ("Freedom House")
  • 1983 to 1988: Co-editor of the English-language edition of the magazine Problems of Peace and Socialism
  • 1988 to 1993: Secretary of the Guyanese Agricultural Workers' Union (GAWU) for international affairs
  • 1993 to 1997: General Secretary of the PPP

Career in the People's Progressive Party

In 1967 he joined the PPP and since 1979 he has been a member of its central committee. Since 1983 he was a member of the party executive committee. He has been party chairman since 1997 (after Cheddi Jagan's death ).

Presidency

After his party's victory in the parliamentary elections on November 28, 2011, Donald Ramotar became President of Guyana on December 3, 2011, succeeding Bharrat Jagdeo .

The early elections to the National Assembly on May 11, 2015, lost the ruling party PPP and President Ramotar to the opposition alliance A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and Alliance for Change (AFC) led by David Arthur Granger , who became the new on May 16, 2015 President was sworn in.
