Janet Jagan , b. Rosenberg, (born October 20, 1920 in Chicago , Illinois , † March 28, 2009 in Georgetown , Guyana ) was a Guyanese politician and writer.

Life

Janet Jagan came from a family who immigrated to the United States from Hungary and Romania . She became a nurse and met Cheddi Jagan , who was then studying dentistry and maxillofacial surgery at Northwestern University . They married in 1943 and moved to Cheddi Jagan's homeland, British Guiana , that same year . She supported her husband in his struggle for social reform and the independence of the colony. From 1950 to 1970 she was general secretary of the People's Progressive Party (PPP). In 1953 she was one of the first three women to be elected to the House of Assembly of British Guiana. From 1957 to 1964 she was Minister of Labor and Health in her husband's government. From 1976 she was again a member of parliament.

In 1997 she was Prime Minister for a short time and from December 19, 1997 to August 11, 1999, President of Guyana.

In addition, Janet Jagan worked as a writer and published several children's books and a book on the history of the PPP.
