Dondra Head Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse ( English Lighthouse ) in Sri Lanka . It stands on Dondra Head and marks the southernmost point of the Indian subcontinent and the border between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal .
General
With the opening of the Suez Canal , what was then British Ceylon was located in the middle of the international sea route between Europe and the Far East from 1869 . Since the shallow water depths of the Adams Bridge made the passage of the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka impossible for shipping , the island had to be bypassed to the south. For this reason, three lighthouses were commissioned by the Imperial Lighthouse Service there in the 1870s : Great Basses Reef Lighthouse , Little Basses Reef Lighthouse and, most recently, Dondra Head Lighthouse. The three towers were designed by James Nicholas Douglass and erected under the supervision of his brother William Douglass.
description
The 49 meter high and octagonal tower was built with stones from Scotland and Cornwall . After three years of construction, the beacon was put into operation in March 1890.
The beacon has a fire height of 47 m and shows as an identifier a white flash with a return of 5 seconds (Fl.W.5s). Due to its importance, the tower is also equipped with a radar beacon . A traffic separation area has been set up south of Dondra Head to direct ship traffic .
