Little Basses Reef Lighthouse is a lighthouse ( English Lighthouse ) before the Southern Province of Sri Lanka .
General
With the opening of the Suez Canal , what was then British Ceylon was located in the middle of the international sea route between Europe and the Far East from 1869 . Since the shallow water depths of the Adams Bridge made the passage of the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka impossible for shipping , the island had to be bypassed to the south. For this reason, three lighthouses were commissioned by the Imperial Lighthouse Service in the 1870s : Great Basses Reef Lighthouse , Little Basses Reef Lighthouse and, most recently, Dondra Head Lighthouse . The three towers were designed by James Nicholas Douglass and erected under the supervision of his brother William Douglass.
description
The nearly 37-foot-high tower stands on Little bass Reef, a 16 nautical miles long reef ( English Reef ) off the southeast coast of the district Hambantota . The granite for the offshore structure completed in 1878 comes from Scotland and England .
The beacon has a fire height of 34 m and shows as an identifier a group of two quick twinkles with a return of 10 seconds (VQ (2) W.10s).
The damage caused by the tsunami , triggered by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami , were supported by the Trinity House and Northern Lighthouse Board repaired. The beacon has been functional again since 2007.
