The Cathedral of Fidenza is the cathedral of the Diocese of Fidenza . It is the martyr San Donnino ordained .

Building

The cathedral dates back to the 12th century and is an important monument to the Lombard - Romanesque churches of the 11th to 13th centuries in Northern Italy . It is the most important building in the city. The unfinished west facade with its two towers and three portals with protruding halls and sculptures is considered an important work of the Emilian Romanesque . It is attributed to the builder Benedetto Antelami or his school. The motif of pilgrimage and travel is taken up in many details. The interior of the three-aisled basilica is designed in a style transitioning from Romanesque to Gothic . Stronger and slimmer pillars with cube-shaped capitals alternate.

Saint Donnino

Legend has it that Donnino was a high-ranking official of the Roman emperor Maximian . The latter did not want to accept that one of his noblemen accepted the Christian faith. Donnino had to flee from Trier to Italy, where most cities did not allow him entry.

He was taken in Fidenza, but here he was seized by Maximian's soldiers and beheaded around the year 296. The legend continues that Donnino takes his severed head under his arm, crosses the river Stirone and finds his final resting place on the other side of the river. Even after his death, miracles, mostly related to travel and traffic, were ascribed to him. So he became a patron saint of pilgrims . His feast day is October 9th .
