The Stirone is a river in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna , a left tributary of the Taro .

Its main tributaries are Utanella, Varolo, Borla, Ghiara and Rovacchia.

On old maps it is also listed under the names Sisterione , Sisterone or Sistrone .

course

The Stirone rises on the Piana di Maneia, on the eastern flanks of the Santa Cristina and Guardia mountains, above Pellegrino Parmense . It runs in the west of the province of Parma and partially forms the border with the province of Piacenza . After crossing Salsomaggiore , the Stirone approaches Fidenza . The river used to run near the Cathedral of Fidenza ; A bridge arch can still be seen in the medieval city gate.

In Fontanelle ( village of the municipality Roccabianca ) passes under the Stirone the bridge "dal Mulen" and then flows into the Taro.

The degradation of gravel has increased the erosion of the river bed. The Parco fluviale regional dello Stirone serves to protect the ecosystem .

Fossils

They found prints of turtles, mussels and whales. The finds can be seen in the Museo dei fossili di Salsomaggiore and in the Museo dei fossili di Fidenza
