The Donohue Highway is an outback track in the west of the Australian state of Queensland . It connects the Diamantina Developmental Road near Boulia with the Plenty Highway on the border with the Northern Territory and crosses the northern foothills of the Simpson Desert .

The entire length of the Donohue Highway is part of the Outback Highway , which runs 2,800 km through central Australia.

course

The road branches off the Diamantina Developmental Road (D83) to the west about 8 km north of Boulia. The Georgina River is crossed after 166 km and after another 83 km you reach the border with the Northern Territory at Tobermorey , a place with 20 inhabitants, already located in the Northern Territory. From here the track continues as Plenty Highway (S12) towards Alice Springs .

Road conditions

The route is mostly unpaved and characterized by a washboard-like surface (English: corrugations ), deep potholes and fine, red desert dust (English: bulldust ). However, it is being expanded further, initially the river crossings were paved, and in 2009 other parts of the road were paved. Despite the expansion, the track is often impassable after heavy rain.
