Doom VFR

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Doom VFR is a first-person shooter and VR computer game from the American computer game developer id Software . It is an offshoot of Doom -Spielereihe and was specifically on technical basis of Doom (2016) with its own plot and for use with virtual reality goggles PlayStation VR and HTC Vive developed. The game was released in early December 2017.

action

The story happens in parallel to plot elements from Doom (2016). The player embodies a UAC employee on a Mars station who is attacked by a demon after opening a hell portal and barely survives. When he wakes up again, he is in a holosuit. He roams the complex trying to close the hell portal again.

Gameplay

The game can be controlled on the PlayStation 4 with the Dualshock, the Aim or two Move controllers, the corresponding controller is supported for the HTC Vive. The game is shown from the first person perspective . In order to avoid the problem of nausea through the motion simulation, the locomotion in Doom VFR takes place through a combination of lateral evasive movements ("dash") and teleportation to a place previously marked by the player. The Dash is mainly used to evade enemy attacks, with teleportation the player moves within the levels. In principle, the game happens in real time, but when teleportation is initiated, the game is significantly delayed. Apart from locomotion, Doom VFR continues the gameplay of the series, which mainly consists of exploring the Martian laboratory and fighting numerous demonic opponents. Different weapons are available (shotgun, heavy assault rifle, plasma rifle, BFG). A special method is the so-called "telefragging". If an opponent is weakened by the previous attacks, which is indicated by a blue glow on the figure, the player can kill the demon immediately by teleporting into the body of the demon.

development

Bethesda announced the game at the E3 2017 game fair . The VFR in the title stands for "Virtual Fucking Reality" (English, roughly translated: "damn virtual reality"). The game was released on December 1, 2017.

Doom VFR received mixed reviews ( Metacritic : 69% (PC) / 71% (PS4)).

“With the quick teleport and dash system, the makers have found an almost optimal means of moving in fast action games - at least on gamepads. Unfortunately, the viewing direction cannot be changed on the Vive when teleporting, which might bring greater tactical advantages. So you have to turn around yourself and be careful not to get tangled in the real cable of the Vive glasses. The control via gamepad is easier to use. But on both systems the demon battle plate is still a lot of fun. "

- Stephan Greitemeier : Heise Online

“We think that Doom's first foray into virtual reality was very successful. For forest clearing, we would like more scope and a multiplayer mode - and lots of fresh monsters for telefragging. "

- Peter Steinlechner : Golem.de

“I would be lying if I said I didn't expect more from Doom VFR. Where Skyrim and apparently also Fallout 4 deliver the full package, this is far from being on par with the polished main game. Doom VFR is still a worth seeing variant, tasting a bit like amusement arcade attraction, to stick your skull in this world. Quickly in, quickly out again and at 30 euros not really overpriced. Not much remains, as an experiment for the developers to transport a hellishly nimble action game into virtual reality, it was definitely worth it. "
