Doom ( ger .: , doom ',' corruption ',' Doom, doom 'or' evil fate ' own notation : DOOM ) is a first-person shooter - computer games series. The first part was published on December 10, 1993 by id Software . Because of the 3D graphics and the commercial success, the title is considered a milestone in the field of computer games.
In Germany, Doom and Doom 2 - Hell on Earth have been on the list for media harmful to minors of the Federal Testing Office for writings harmful to minors (BPjS) since May 1994 and December 1994 and were not allowed to be advertised in Germany in the following period. On August 4, 2011, the games were removed from the list following a request from the rights holder. Only the American version of Doom 2 remains on the list, as there are two levels taken from the indexed and nationwide confiscated game Wolfenstein 3D . The USK granted destined for the German market games on August 30, 2011, a Certificate from 16 years.

Main series
Doom
The first part of Doom was released on December 10, 1993. The German distribution was carried out by cdv software and by Pearl Agency . In terms of content, the game revolves around failed teleportation experiments by the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) on the two Martian moons Phobos and Deimos . This unintentionally opens a portal to hell . Demons occupy the research facilities, people are killed or turned into zombies . The player slips into the role of a space marine who is on the moon Phobos and faces the hell creatures.
With the Doom engine used , developer id Software set new standards in the field of 3D graphics at the time of publication. Compared to Wolfenstein 3D , the engine was able to implement diagonally angled floor plans and also allowed the creation of different heights and round rooms, which enabled new design options for the level design. She continued not to use polygons, but instead relied on raycasting techniques to create the three-dimensional impression . Textures, objects and opponents were based on two-dimensional graphics (including sprites ). With Binary Space Partitioning (BSP) it was possible to display large levels smoothly, even for 386 PCs . Another popular feature of Doom was the multiplayer mode with up to three other players over a network .
In Germany, Doom was indexed by the Federal Inspectorate for Writings Harmful to Young People (BPjS) because of the depiction of violence . This was announced in the Federal Gazette No. 100 of May 31, 1994. In August 2011, the deletion of the list was announced in the Federal Gazette No. 131 of August 31, 2011. The source code of the game was first released in 1997. Since the release, various projects have adopted the program, and for example, it to other operating systems ported, and bugs and limitations of the graphics engine removed.
Doom 2: Hell on Earth
Doom 2: Hell on Earth was released on September 30, 1994. The German distribution was carried out by cdv software . As the successor to Doom , it hardly differs technically from this one and only offers new levels, new textures, a few new opponents and another weapon, the double-barreled shotgun. The plot follows on from the previous one. After the player-controlled Space Marine escapes from Hell , he goes back to his home on earth. There he finds out that the demons have already gained the upper hand here too, and so he sets out to protect the earth from the creatures of hell. After all other people have been evacuated onto a spaceship, the player sets out to find the portal through which the demons came to earth. When he finally found this in the heart of his hometown, he realizes that it can only be closed from the other side, and so he enters the hell dimension one more time to save the earth.
The US version of Doom 2 contains two secret levels, which were almost complete copies of levels 1 and 9 from Episode 1 of Wolfenstein 3D . These levels have been removed for the version marketed in Germany , as they are populated by Nazis and therefore swastikas and Adolf Hitler portraits can be seen in them. However, Doom 2, like its predecessor, was indexed by the BPjS because of the depictions of violence . Like its predecessor, indexing was lifted in August 2011. This does not apply to the US version of Doom 2 , which is still indexed due to the contained program parts of the confiscated Wolfenstein 3D .
Doom 3
On August 3, 2004, Doom 3 was released in the United States. In Germany, the game was released on August 13, 2004 on three CDs in the unabridged original English version with a German manual. Despite major changes in gameplay and graphics, the game still combines the typical Doom aspects of horror and brute action.
Because of the continued success of id Software's previous games, Doom 3 became a highly anticipated game. The publisher Activision started the largest delivery in the history of Activision Germany on the date of publication.
Doom 3 was the first first-person shooter from id Software to not be indexed in Germany: The game is approved for ages 18+ and was released for Linux , macOS , Windows , Xbox , Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 .
The Linux version was released on October 5, 2004, the Mac OS X version on March 14, 2005, and the Xbox version on April 4, 2005. With the patch to version 1.3, the anti- cheat tool PunkBuster was introduced into the multiplayer mode. With the patch, it is no longer necessary to insert the original game CD.
Doom (2016)
In May 2008, it was announced on the development studio's public website that id Software would hire additional staff to develop a sequel. The plot of the game is written by the English author Graham Joyce . The first-person shooter was originally supposed to be based on the new graphics engine id Tech 5 , which was already used for the id software title Rage (2011) and was used in Wolfenstein: The New Order and The Evil Within (both 2014). At Quakecon 2014 it was confirmed that Doom is based on the successor engine id Tech 6 . Although the single player mode was the focus of Bethesda's presentation at E3 2015, the Doom reboot will offer classic multiplayer variants at a very high speed, with game modes such as Deathmatch and Capture the Flag firmly planned. In addition, it should be possible to create your own content and game variants using a so-called snapmap editor.
Those who pre-ordered the computer game Wolfenstein: The New Order , published on May 20, 2014, were given the opportunity to test the Doom Beta . This announcement was also the first official confirmation of the Doom reboot . The beta test took place in Europe from April 1st to 4th, 2016. Supported platforms are Windows and the next-gen consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . Doom was first presented to the public at QuakeCon 2014 and, as announced at E3 2015, will be released in spring 2016. In February 2016, the publisher Bethesda Softworks specified the release date as Friday, May 13th, 2016. Paid additional content is planned for the time after the release and will be distributed by Bethesda individually or in a season pass.
Doom Eternal
At E3 2018, Bethesda Softworks announced Doom Eternal, the direct successor to Doom (2016). The sequel was presented to the public for the first time at Quakecon 2018. Doom Eternal was released on March 20, 2020 for Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as well as Google Stadia . It should also be released for Nintendo Switch later this year. The game was developed by id Software based on the new id Tech 7 engine. Pre-orderers received a new edition of Doom 64 for current platforms.
Offshoot
Final Doom
In Final Doom is one developed by TeamTNT and in 1996 officially by id Software released "successor" to Doom II . Final Doom includes two new episodes ( TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment ) with 32 levels each and is based on the same game engine as Doom II .
Final Doom runs independently and was sold together with the port for Windows 95 ( Doom95 ). However, there are also DOS versions that are a modification of the original Doom2.exe . With the help of the Doom95 starter program, all versions of Doom ( Doom Shareware / Doom / Ultimate Doom , Doom 2 , Final Doom / The Plutonia Experiment , Final Doom / TNT: Evilution ) can be integrated and thus started directly under Windows operating systems. This means that higher screen resolutions are also possible, with the bitmaps of weapons, monsters, etc. retaining the low standard resolution. Under Windows 2000 / XP and Vista the mouse control for Doom95 has no function, because the outdated VXD mouse driver is no longer supported.
In addition to the PC version, Final Doom has also appeared on the PlayStation 1 . However, this console implementation contains different levels and sequences than the version published for the PC. The levels consist of the master levels for Doom II and Final Doom . Another change is the soundtrack composed especially for the PlayStation version.
Doom 64
The Doom 64 published in 1997 by Midway Games San Diego in coordination with id Software for the Nintendo 64 game console was the next independent part of the Doom series after Doom 2 . The story takes place after the events of Doom 2 and describes how a completely new demon, called "Mother Demon", repopulates the Martian base that has just been freed from monsters. The aim of the game is to eliminate all monsters. In terms of play, it did not contain any significant changes, but brought some technical innovations to the series. Doom 64 includes 32 levels specially created for the console, new textures with higher resolutions, as well as new graphics for the weapons and monsters that could use the capabilities of the Nintendo 64, such as antialiasing . The well-known weapons from the second part have been adopted and some have been given a recoil. New is a demonic laser cannon called "Unmaker", which can be upgraded with three artifacts hidden in the levels. Technically, Doom 64 is based on a further developed Doom 2 engine. For the first time, the opportunity was used to place rooms on top of each other, to illuminate the surroundings in color or to animate the skybox.
Doom RPG
Id Software released the mobile game Doom RPG developed by Fountainhead Entertainment in 2005 . This is a turn-based role - playing game that reuses many of the graphics from the first two parts of the Doom series. The gameplay has been supplemented with some ideas from Doom 3 , so that, for example, e-mails and diaries can be read by NPCs . A fully localized and censored version was launched in Germany in 2006.
Doom VFR
In 2017 id Software brought an offshoot based on Doom (2016) for the VR glasses PlayStation VR and HTC Vive . The VFR of the title stands for Virtual Fucking Reality . It tells a parallel plot to Doom and works with a teleport movement system to prevent the feeling of nausea during VR experiences .

Movies
After some screen adaptations of computer games such as Resident Evil and Tomb Raider , a cinematic version of Doom of the same name was added on October 28, 2005 . The scenario known from the games has been changed: Instead of hell demons, human mutants now threaten the Martian base. Above all, the adaptation of the first- person perspective known from computer games is to be emphasized. The main characters in this film are Karl Urban and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson .
The film was received mostly negatively, so it received only 20% on the Rotten Tomatoes site and was nominated once for the Golden Raspberry .
In 2019, Doom: The Destruction ( Doom: Annihilation ) was released as a direct-to-video production.
Board game
In 2004 Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) published a board game for the computer game Doom 3 under the name Doom - The Board Game . This was published in German by the Heidelberger Spieleverlag (HSV) about a year later . Later the expansion "Doom: The Board Game Expansion" came out. The German version was published in May 2008.
Comic
The Doom comic book is a sixteen-page comic book , which was founded in 1996 by Steve Behling and Michael Stewart written by Tom Grindberg drawn and colored. It was produced by Dana Moreshead for Marvel Comics as a promotional item for a video game fair . The story is based on the plot of Doom and Doom 2 and revolves around a soldier who is looking for a strong armament to defeat a cyberdemon .
There are two known editions of the comic. The first was the original print as a promotional gift, the second version was produced for the id Anthology collection.
Novels
Between 1995 and 1996, four novels about the game were published that were officially licensed by id Software. They were published in German translation from 2005. The author of the novels is Dafydd from Hugh , who was already known in the Star Trek scene through book publications. While the first two parts of the series are still very much based on the classic games, the last sequels go completely new ways.

GPL projects
Even today, the original Doom , on whose engine the successor titles Doom 2 , Final Doom , Heretic , Hexen and other independent games are based, still has a large fan base. Some ports even have OpenGL and DirectX support, which means that the graphics can keep up with much more recent titles. These further developments, which were made possible thanks to the GPL approval of the engine by id Software, nevertheless work together with the original graphics and level files (WADs), which means that the old flair of the game is maintained. Alternatively, the Sprite graphics can also be replaced by polygon models, as used in the titles of the Quake series.
In order to use the source ports without the original games, which are still protected and can be purchased, a group of fans have come together on the Internet under the project name FreeDoom to create content (levels, graphics, textures and sound effects) for a complete create a free Doom version and publish it under a modified BSD license .
