FBI Agent Garcia is led by Dr. Yates called to the Black Sea. This has completely disappeared since an earthquake last night. The team has to disappear after an aftershock that turns the Black Sea into a giant canyon. In New York City , Eric Fox is sent by his boss Sam Lovell to the self-proclaimed prophet Rupert Crane in British Columbia to pick up a book. Once there, Eric has to overhear on the phone how Sam and hundreds of thousands of other people are killed in a huge earthquake in Manhattan and the city sinks into the ground. The world is in a panic because the whole of Italy has sunk in the Mediterranean after an earthquake , and science has not yet come to an explanation.
When Eric arrives at Crane's house, he finds Crane dead. Before his death, Rupert had called in archaeologist Brooke Calvin. When Brooke arrives at the house, they are supposed to watch a video of Rupert with Eric. Rupert bequeaths an antique staff to Eric with which he can see into the future. But this stick is also very dangerous. Eric and Brooke must find a group of Moais and bring the staff to them, or the world will end the night ahead. Shortly afterwards, an FBI task force under the direction of Garcia arrives. Since Eric and Brooke are suspected of the murder of Rupert Crane, the two flee, but are henceforth pursued by the unscrupulous agent Henning.
It has now been determined that the earth is approaching dangerously close to a black hole and that the earth's surface will soon be completely displaced. After Eric and Brooke escape a volcanic eruption, they meet a man named John and his granddaughter Raven. The two help them, but are surprised by Henning. Eric manages to kill Henning in a duel. In the meantime, a huge canyon has drawn through Canada . In her search for the moais, Garcia takes her side. They manage to find and dig up the moais. Then Garcia's boss, General Slate, appears and demands the staff. He also reveals to Eric that Crane was his father. Garcia is shot by a soldier. Eric and Brooke manage to incapacitate the soldiers and stick the staff in the central moai. Suddenly a ray of light shoots into the sky, enveloping the earth and protecting it from the black hole. General Slate is torn apart when touching the staff. Garcia survived and with Eric and Brooke they listen to a radio address from the American President calling on survivors around the world to rebuild. Who built the moais remains a mystery.
