The branch church of the Krostitz parish is located in the Torgau-Delitzsch parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . It is both the oldest building in the village and the oldest church building in the parish area. The village church including the cemetery with enclosure and war memorial is a registered cultural monument in the list of monuments of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments of Saxony (object number 08973242).

history

The village church of Behlitz was probably built as a forest chapel between the 9th and 11th centuries. Parts of the hall walls, the lower part of the tower and the apse as well as an old wall painting in the chancel, which shows the twelve apostles, above whom Christ stands in the middle, speak for a dating to the Romanesque period . This corresponds to a frequently used motif during this period. The nave is attributed to the turning point . According to tradition, the church was consecrated to Saint Catherine . A representation of Catherine can be found in a small leaded glass window in the chancel.

A renovation took place between 1702 and 1705, and the first clock was installed on the tower in 1711. Another renovation took place in 1840 when the pews, which are still present today, were installed. The organ dates from 1862. The clock attached to the tower today was installed in 1887. In 1893 the weather vane broke off after a hundred years and had to be replaced. Two of the original three bells were melted down during the First World War . In 1922 a new bell was procured to replace it. During the GDR era, further measures were taken to preserve the building. In 1966 the outer walls were plastered and in 1989 the roof was re-covered. In 1993 and 1994 the interior was renovated, recently the facade has been repainted and the roof has been re-covered.

architecture

The church building consists of a square, compact tower with a hipped roof , which forms the choir room (choir tower church ), and the rectangular hall building attached to the west . Later, an annex protruding on both sides was built on the west side. The apse is flush with the north side of the tower and thus also with the hall, so that it does not lie in the axis of the hall, but deviates to the north.

Since the architecture of the Romanesque was mostly accompanied by a symbolic meaning, there are different interpretations for the construction of the church. One assumes that the floor plan symbolizes the body of Christ on the cross with his head tilted slightly to the left. Another theory sees the apse as the decapitated head of the original namesake Katharina .
