description

The church in Belitz is a three-aisled , brick- walled basilica . To the east there is a two-bay , three-sided closed choir with a ribbed vault , to the north a sacristy also with a ribbed vault. There is a square tower to the west. The main building was built from around 1270, the tower was added in the 15th century and was originally higher, but its upper part was removed in 1773 and the tower was covered by a tent roof. From 1886 to 1888 the church was extensively renovated, during which the aisles of the building were completely renewed and given a ribbed vault. The central nave, spanned by a flat wooden ceiling, was also partially renewed. The church has had its characteristic neo-Gothic features since this renovation in the late 19th century . Two galleries, one above the other, have been drawn in to the west of the church. The lower gallery dates from 1670. On the younger organ gallery above there is an organ that was made in 1784 by Christian Heinrich Kersten in Rostock. This organ was expanded in 1858 by Friedrich Wilhelm Winzer and restored in 1963 by Friedrich Löbling and today has 18 stops on two manuals and a pedal .

Large parts of the church's furnishings date from around the renovation of 1886/88, including the pulpit and stalls as well as the mural on the east wall of the central nave, which shows the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus and was painted by the church painter Krause from Wismar, as well the resurrection scene on the altar wall by the Dresden painter Karl Christian Andreae . Various historical epitaphs and tombstones can also be seen in the church, including an epitaph for M. Schmeker († 1596), ornately decorated with alabaster reliefs, which was made in the workshop of Claus Midow in 1602 , and the epitaph for the stick trumpeter and pitcher owner Jacob Hintze (murdered 1677) with his contemporary trumpet.

The church treasury includes several historical chalices, wafer boxes and candlesticks.
