History and architecture

Levin village church before 1977

The Levin village church is a rectangular stone building with a retracted choir, which was built in 1253 according to dendrochronological dating. In contrast to other parallel stone churches, the windows, grouped in pairs, are still provided with round arches, which is why the style of the church can still be classified as Romanesque, although a stylistic classification of such rural-archaic buildings is not possible with absolute certainty. In contrast to comparable village churches, the gable of the choir is also listed here without any further architectural structure made of field stone. A stair frieze was added under the eaves in Gothic times.

Inside, the church is closed off with high-busted ribbed vaults in two bays that are very low. The heavy triumphal arch between the choir and nave shows a pressed pointed arch. The vault of the choir as well as the southern extension are from a restoration around 1885.

The tower, which is square in plan with an octagonal pointed spire, was probably added in the 15th century. The upper part of the tower is built of brick and shows a rich panel structure on the bell storey and on the four shield gables. Overall, the church shows a well-proportioned grouping of the building dimensions, especially when viewed from the southeast.

Furnishing

A significant part of the furnishings comes from the restoration in 1885. There are also three coat of arms reliefs from 1575 on the pulpit. In the choir there are eight more heraldic reliefs from 1581. A brass baptismal font was made in the 18th century.

The liturgical furnishings include three chalices from 1588, 1698 and 1747. Three silver-gilt paten were made in the 18th century, one of them in 1702. Two pairs of pewter candlesticks belong to the year 1715 and the 19th century.

The organ is a work with eight registers on a manual and pedal from 1839 by Heinrich Rasche . Two medieval bells, the Marienglocke from 1430 and the Annenglocke with the foundry mark A. Ribe from 1514, set the bell. Two other bells date from 1654.
