Peckatel village church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The village church of Peckatel in the municipality of Plate in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the smallest half-timbered church in Mecklenburg. It was built in 1692. In the east it is closed on three sides. In the west there is a low, boarded wooden tower with a gable roof. The boards are said to have been obtained from the wood of the previous building. The roofing consists of beaver tails with a crown covering. The church is surrounded by a village green with old trees, which was previously a cemetery. In the past, the church was only used on the day of penance and prayer . Today it belongs to the parish of Plate, together with Banzkow , Consrade and Plate. The parish belongs to the Wismar Propstei in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

Building history

Church in Peckatel in 2007

In 1596 a chapel in Peckatel used for baptisms and funerals was first mentioned in a document. This predecessor of today's church was destroyed during the Thirty Years War .

According to Dorotheus Graf Rothkirch, it is guaranteed that the chapel that still exists today was built in 1692. Originally, the entire walls including the half-timbered beams were whitewashed. Except for an altar there was no equipment.

It was only Pastor Christian Aeschen (1681–1751) who designed today's altar and the pulpit with the confessional. After 1718, the Peckateler Zimmermann Stahl created the furnishings designed by Aeschen.

The increasingly decaying chapel was poorly repaired in 1934 and 1948 without eliminating the causes of the deterioration.

1970–1971 there was a sustainable renovation of the building. The soaked foundation was exposed and replaced by a concrete strip, the level of the surrounding soil was lowered. The lower, rotten parts of the framework were removed up to a height of 40 cm. The interior lost height as a result of the construction work. Parts of the altar and pulpit therefore had to be shortened at the top and bottom.

In 1995 an electric seat heater was installed. Since monthly services have been held since 1996, the former chapel is now called the village church.

In 2005 and 2006 the interior was extensively restored.

Interior

Pulpit and confessional

The pulpit and confessional, created by Pastor Aeschen and Zimmermann Stahl in the 18th century, form a coherent unit. In the panels of the wall of the confessional there are two pictures, above them the related Bible quotes.

The left picture shows Moses with the tablets of the Law on Mount Sinai. The text above reads: "Cursed be he who does not keep all the words of this law, that he should do it" (Deuteronomy 27: 11-26)

The right picture shows John the Baptist with the Christ Lamb. Above it is the text: "See this is God's Lamb who bears the sin of the world." (John 1: 15-29)

You can see more fields with sayings above the door and on the stairs to the pulpit, besides biblical quotations also a text written by the artist himself:

This what your eye sees
is for God's honor alone
Hand built by the artist
and give your presents here.
God from whom we have everything
it replaces the mild gifts
which here too applied
plentiful u. with a gentle hand.

The pulpit consists of a sound cover , back wall and basket. The back wall shows Christ as world ruler, the basket the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The sound cover bears the image of a dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit on the underside . The surrounding text on the edge of the sound cover reads:

Holy, holy is the god of hosts,
all lands are full of his honor. (Isaiah 6.3)

altar

There is a framed picture above the altar table, flanked by two columns with Corinthian capitals . The pillars support a projecting entablature with two spherical vases. The picture represents the Last Supper and shows Jesus with his twelve disciples. Three biblical scenes are depicted in a small oval frame above the image of the Lord's Supper: the Entombment, Resurrection and Ascension of Christ . The altar table is provided with quotes from the Bible that are addressed to those who attended the sacrament. They were originally attached to the altar cabinets, which no longer exist today.
