The village church in Roßdorf is the evangelical church in Roßdorf , a district of the city of Jerichow in Saxony-Anhalt . The Romanesque brick church with a baroque tower tower is located in the middle of the village in the middle of the old cemetery and is the landmark of the village.

history

The church is of Romanesque origin and was built around 1200 under the strong influence of the Jerichow collegiate church. A baroque half-timbered tower with a curved dome and an open lantern was built over the tower, which was probably not completed in the Middle Ages . At the same time, the interior was redesigned.

The well-preserved, stately four-part brick building is richly structured by pilaster strips and various decorative friezes, such as the German ribbon , round arch , cross arch and diamond frieze. Despite several structural changes, the more than 800-year-old Romanesque basic structure with west transverse tower, nave, choir and apse is still clearly recognizable. A construction seam between the choir and nave shows that first the eastern parts, then the tower and only last the walls from west to east were built. Most of the arched openings are now walled up. The stepped portal of the main entrance with its round arches in the western front of the tower is well preserved. The arched windows of the nave and the rectangular portals were only created during the work on the tower in the Baroque period.

Priest gate with paw cross

A Romanesque paw cross made of inlaid bricks is located above the priest's gate on the north side . The basement of the tower opens up in 3 arcades towards the nave, of which the middle one is pointed.

A wooden hollow vault spans the interior, which was redesigned in the second half of the 17th century. There are consecration crosses and ornaments on the walls . On the north gallery a painting shows Christ as ruler of the world with seven apostles . Above the priest's door there are fragments of a wall painting - probably Christ and Nicodemus - which, together with the stepped round arches of the choir room, designed as a triumphal arch, give an impression of the appearance of the interior in the Middle Ages.

The brick altar table in the chancel has a baroque wooden structure with the donor's inscription from 1678 and the estate's coat of arms. The altar structure was bought from Karow in 1859 and repainted by the painter G. Braumann from Magdeburg in the same year . The altar panel is decorated with an Italian landscape of ruins and contains columns on the sides. The figures of Moses and John the Baptist stand in the wing pieces. Holy Communion is shown in the predella . Three painted wooden figures from the earlier altar, dated around 1600, can be viewed in the Genthin District Home Museum .

The octagonal Gothic font with a diameter of one meter is made of sandstone . The brass font donated by Jakob Bolike dates from 1655 and contains a carved Latin cross in the rear . In the choir there is a plaque commemorating those who fell in the Napoleonic Wars.

The pulpit is made of wood with Tuscan corner columns and is decorated with paintings of the writing evangelists with their symbols . Opposite the pulpit hangs a triumphal crucifix from the 15th century, which was taken over to furnish the old parish church in Genthin .

The organ with a simple, plain prospectus was installed by the organ building company G. Voigt from Halberstadt in July 1861. After it had not been playable for a long time, it was extensively restored in several steps between 2006 and 2010.

Of the original three bells from 1300, two are still preserved today. The smallest and the middle bell had to be given in during the Second World War , the middle one reappeared, the smallest one remained lost. The bells bear the inscription:

"+ O REX GLORIE CHRISTE VENI CUM PACE
O King of Honor, Christ come with peace."

In the years after 1945, the church was able to be preserved with great effort despite numerous structural damage. Nevertheless, in 1983 the church was closed due to dilapidation. In 1984 the church tower was renewed in half-timbered style with the help of a donation appeal from the Roßdorf citizens.

In 1991 the roof of the nave was covered and on December 24, 1992, after a year and a half of construction, the rededication of the 700-year-old church took place. The church tower clock, which is over 100 years old, was repaired in 1997.

In 2001, further maintenance work could be carried out on the church tower, such as the slate covering of the tower and the restoration of the framework. An electric bell was installed for the bells and new sound hatches were installed in 2003 .
