The evangelical village church Rossow is a late Gothic stone church in the Rossow district of Wittstock / Dosse in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district in Brandenburg . It belongs to the parish of Rossow in the church district of Wittstock-Ruppin of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia , is known for the valuable Gothic altarpiece from the 14th century and can be visited upon registration.

History and architecture

The church is a simple late medieval hall building made of field stone with brick edges from the beginning of the 16th century; the western, free-standing boarded bell tower dates from 1684. On the south side, the portal covered by the later added vestibule and a wide, arched window with stepped brick walls have been preserved unchanged; . A steep east gable made of brick is provided with a two-zone segmental arched panel structure, its upper end and the fial-like attachments have been partially renewed.

The flat-roofed interior is characterized by the large, sophisticated wall paintings, which originate from a first painting around 1520/30. They are in fair condition and were restored between 1961–64. A large crucifixion is shown in the center of the east wall, including the nailing, erection and removal of the cross, a Vespers picture and the entombment. A protective cloak Madonna is shown at the top right. The long walls are divided into three horizontal zones, the middle one is made up of biblical scenes in which the Passion and the glorification of Christ are juxtaposed. On the north wall, Jesus can be seen in front of Pilate and Herod, the scourging and a man of sorrows . Near the east wall, breaking through the sequence of scenes, the betrayal and suicide of Judas are depicted; on the south wall the journey into hell and the resurrection of Christ are assigned. There follow the three women at the grave, the Ascension of Christ, the Coronation of Mary and the Last Judgment , including a depiction of hell with devils. The zones above and below the framed picture sequences are decorated with rich tendrils; In the upper one there are also individual figures: on the north wall (female side) female saints and a Madonna in a halo and the Assumption of Mary Magdalene, on the south side apostles and male saints.

Furnishing

In front of the west wall is a mighty altarpiece made of regional oak, which was created between 1304 and 1306 after a dendrochronological investigation. It is shaped by Cologne and is rated as one of the most important in the country. It is believed that this is the former main altar of the Havelberg Cathedral , which has been kept in Rossow since 1607. The altar was restored and supplemented in 1961-64, with the original version being largely exposed.

In the middle part of the shrine, divided into two zones, the coronation of Mary is depicted with the seated figures of Christ and Mary, at her feet the seated lions of the Solomonic throne are arranged at the sides, above them angels and cherubim . In the lower field there is a crucifixion group in front of a gold background, which is provided with the half-length figures of the prophets Isaiah and Jeremias in the upper corners. The middle part is framed by carved figures of the twelve apostles, also arranged in two rows, holding banners with the Credo , under pointed arches, which are adorned in the upper row by crab-studded eyelashes and tracery . The wide frame made of ornamented gold-plated pewter with embedded glass rivers has been supplemented many times. The architectural structure of the central shrine is continued on the inside of the wings in carefully executed, finely glazed painting. Eight saints are depicted in two rows one above the other, but only preserved in fragments. The painting on the outside of the wing, which is closely related to the Bohemian art circle, was renewed around 1400. Eight scenes from the life of Christ are shown; a similar hand can also be proven in the glass painting of the Magdeburg-Altmark area.

Two bells have been preserved in the tower. The smaller bell was cast in 1717, the larger one supposedly comes from the church in Priebs near Wittstock and is said to be 400 to 500 years old.
