The Unterammergau Village Museum is the local history museum of the Upper Bavarian community Unterammergau in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district . The building is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

Building

The former forester's house

The village museum is housed in the former forester's house in Unterammergau. It is located in the upper village of Unterammergau on the west side of the village square. The two-storey building dates from the second half of the 18th century and has a flat gable roof . The gable side of the house faces the village square.

history

In the old forester's house, on the initiative of the Unterammergau Historical Working Group, a room was initially set up as a whetstone museum in 2002, which documented the history of whetstone making in Unterammergau. By setting up additional rooms on other topics, it became a general museum of local history from 2006 to 2012.

exhibition

Several rooms document the main sources of income of the Unterammergauers for centuries: cattle farming , forestry and whetstone making. Further areas of focus are textile processing , archeology and local history .

A grass cart and agricultural implements are on display in one room. Another room shows a tree sledge used to transport wood and tools for logging and transporting wood. A third room shows tools from whetstone quarries and mills that have been preserved, products from various steps in whetstone making and a model of a whetstone mill to illustrate the individual work processes. A historic Beckhütte is reproduced in a small adjoining room.

One room documents the cultivation of flax and the weaving of linen. Paleolontological and archaeological finds from Unterammergau and the surrounding area are displayed in a showcase, including petrified ammonites, an ancient helmet, fibulae and coins. The early settlement history of the area is documented by a Rhaetian sacrificial place on the lower box, Rhaetian rock carvings, finds of Roman coin treasures in the Schleifmühlklamm and finds from Roman times on the Burgbichel. Display boards explain the history of Unterammergau. One room on the upper floor is set up as a historical bedroom.
