Doris Debenjak , née Krisch (born August 5, 1936 in Ljubljana , Yugoslavia ; † September 21, 2013 in Ljubljana, Slovenia ) was a Yugoslav and Slovenian linguist and translator .

Life

Doris Krisch's parents came from the Gottscheer Land, but the daughter grew up bilingually in Ljubljana, Slovene and German , without learning the Gottscheer dialect of her parents. She married the Slovenian philosopher and translator Božidar Debenjak , with whom she was married until her death.

Doris Debenjak completed her studies in German and English language and literature in 1959 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana . For one year she was a lecturer at the teacher training college in Novo mesto . In 1960 she went to the Faculty of Germanic Languages and Literature at the Philosophical Faculty in Ljubljana as an assistant and later as a German lecturer . Starting in 1982, as a freelance cultural worker, she carried out translations from German into Slovenian and vice versa. From 1988 to 1991 she was chairman of the Association of Scientific and Technical Translators of Yugoslavia (Savez društava znanstvenih i tehničkih prevodilaca Jugoslavije / Zveza društev znanstvenih in tehniških prevajalcev Jugoslavije). Among other things, she is the main author of the largest German-Slovenian and Slovenian-German dictionary, which she edited together with her husband and son Primož Debenjak. All three also carried out the translation of Johann Weichard von Valvasor's Honor of the Hertduchy of Krain into Slovenian, for which they were awarded the Order of Merit (Red za zasluge) of the Republic of Slovenia. Doris Debenjak, however, had already died at the time of the award ceremony.

Doris Debenjak was a member of the Gottscheer Altsiedlerverein / Društvo Kočevarjev staroselcev, founded in Pöllandl / Kočevske Poljane in 1992, and was elected to its board on December 8, 2002 in Krapflern / Občice .
