Doris Fisher (born May 2, 1915 in New York , † January 15, 2003 in Los Angeles ) was an American singer and composer .

Life

Doris Fisher was born in New York in 1915 as the daughter of the German-born composer and songwriter Fred Fisher . Inspired by her father, Doris Fisher, like her younger brothers Marvin and Dan, embarked on a musical career. She was initially a singer and performed with the Eddy Duchin Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra and her own band called Penny Wise and Her Wise Guys , among others . In 1938 she composed her first hit song Tutti Frutti with Slim Gaillard , which gave her a job as a songwriter on Broadway for Mike Todd's Star and Garter . Two years later she wrote another hit with her father called Whispering Grass . In 1944 alone, a number of her songs were sung by internationally known artists such as Bing Crosby , The Andrews Sisters , The Mills Brothers , Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday , which is why she was temporarily nicknamed "Queen of the Juke Box". In 1945 she signed a contract with Columbia Pictures in Hollywood , where she and the songwriter Allan Roberts wrote the songs Amado Mio and Put the Blame on Mame for the film noir classic Gilda (1946) with Rita Hayworth . Fisher and Roberts also provided the film songs for the famous film noirs Die Lady von Shanghai ( The Lady from Shanghai , 1947), again with Hayworth, and Late Reconciliation ( Dead Reckoning , 1947) with Humphrey Bogart .

After Fisher married contractor Charles Gershenson in 1947, she retired from the music and film business to raise two children, Frederica and Ned. In the 1950s, Fisher took an interest in furniture design and interior design. She was so successful in her new job that she was allowed to set up the White House in the Kennedy era . After divorcing Gershenson in the 1960s, Fisher returned to Los Angeles , where she opened two cookery stores and was again successful. Doris Fisher died in Los Angeles in 2003 at the age of 87.
