Allan Roberts (born March 12, 1905 in Brooklyn , New York City , † January 14, 1966 in Hollywood , Los Angeles ) was an American pianist , composer and songwriter .

Life

Allan Roberts initially trained as an accountant. However, he became more drawn to show business and began writing material for burlesque and night club shows. He met producer Mike Todd , with whose help Roberts made the leap to Hollywood . In 1945 he got a contract with Columbia Pictures , where he wrote the songs Amado Mio and Put the Blame on Mame together with the composer Doris Fisher for the film noir classic Gilda (1946) . Their compositions also include the songs from the famous film noirs Die Lady von Shanghai ( The Lady from Shanghai , 1947), as in Gilda with Rita Hayworth in the title role, and Late Atonement ( Dead Reckoning , 1947) with Humphrey Bogart .

After Fisher retired from show business in 1947, Roberts formed a songwriting duo with the composer Lester Lee , which, among other things, played for Columbia's B musical Ich tanze in dein Herz ( Ladies of the Chorus , 1948) with the young Marilyn Monroe and the film drama Purgatory ( Miss Sadie Thompson , 1953), again with Hayworth, who contributed the songs. They also wrote the songs for the musical All for Love , which was performed on New York's Broadway in 1949 . From the collaboration with Perry Como's arranger and pianist Robert Allen, the song To Know You Is to Love You was created in 1952 , with which Como landed a hit. In the early 1960s, Roberts also withdrew from the music and film business. He died in Hollywood in 1966 at the age of 60 .
