Thornfish (Stephanoberycidae) live in the deep sea of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic and Pacific . In South Africa they also go to the Indian Ocean . They live at depths of 1000 to 5000 meters.

features

The scales of the fish, which are only 8 to 16 centimeters long, have thorn-like outgrowths. The lateral line organ is only poorly developed. The dorsal and anal fins each have 10 to 14 soft rays. Hard rays, if present, are only weakly developed.

There are only four species in four monotypical genera, all of which are only known from a few captured specimens.
