Dorothy Alison (officially Dorothy Dickson ; born April 4, 1925 in Broken Hill , New South Wales , † January 17, 1992 in London , England ) was an Australian theater , film and television actress .

life and career

Dorothy Dickson was born in 1925 in the mining town of Broken Hill , New South Wales . Her father, William Edward Dickson, emigrated from Lancashire to Broken Hill at the age of 20 and worked there as a miner until 1919.

As a child, Dorothy took dance lessons at Broken Hill and has appeared in plays. In addition to attending Sydney Girls High School, she learned acting with Doris Fitton in the Independent Theater. After being hired by a radio station, she took on the stage name Dorothy Alison. In the cinema, she first worked with directors Charles and Elsa Chauvel and then appeared in the films Rivals in the Jungle and Gold Digger . In 1949 she moved to London and continued her career there. She played numerous supporting roles in movies and starred in the television series A Town Like Alice and The Adventures of Robin Hood .

She was nominated for the BAFTA Awards in 1952 for Mandy in the category “Most Promising Newcomer” and in 1956 for Defying All Violence in the category “Best British Actress”. For her portrayal in A Town Like Alice she received the Logie Award in 1982 in the category "Best Supporting Actress - Miniseries / TV Movie".

Alison died in London in 1992 at the age of 66.
