Capsicum flexuosum is a species from the genus Paprika ( Capsicum ) inthe nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Capsicum flexuosum is a 0.5 to two meter high shrub . The leaves are elliptical to ovate, membranous and only sparsely covered with trichomes . The inflorescences consist of two or three (rarely one to six) drooping flowers . On chalice no clearly visible appendage or calyx teeth are visible. The crown is colored white and has five yellowish-green points at the base of the corolla lobes and the inside of the corolla tube. The fruits are berries that are red in color when ripe. The seeds are blackish-brown. The fruits are mostly hot , but individual populations have been observed that produce non-hot fruits.

The chromosome number is 2n = 24.

distribution

The species is native to northeast Argentina , the south and southeast of Brazil , and Paraguay .

Systematics

After the species was initially considered close to the species groups around Capsicum annuum and Capsicum baccaatum , or as a relatively solitary species, phylogenetic investigations made it close to the so-called Bolivian clade (consisting of Capsicum caballeroi , Capsicum minutiflorum , Capsicum ceratocalyx and Capsicum coccineum ) be asked. This relationship is not strongly confirmed by the investigation, and no relevant morphological similarities to these species can be determined. The species is therefore listed in a monotypic Flexuosum clade.

Botanical history

Capsicum flexuosum was first described by Otto Sendtner in the 10th volume of Flora Brasiliensis in 1846.
