Life

Otto Sendtner was the son of the writer couple Jakob Sendtner and his wife Barbara "Betty" Sendtner , daughter of the publisher Peter Philipp Wolf and sister of the painter Louise Wolf . Theodor von Sendtner was one of his six siblings .

After graduating from high school in 1830, he studied natural sciences at the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich at the University of Munich . Karl Friedrich Schimper was an influential teacher . In 1837 he was employed as a private secretary by a landlord in Silesia and during this time he studied the cryptogam flora of the Sudetenland . From 1841 he was a curator at the ducal Leuchtenberg natural history cabinet in Eichstätt . In 1842 he managed the documented first ascent of Razor and Kanin . From 1843, Sendtner undertook botanical collecting trips through Istria and Tyrol in collaboration with Mutius von Tommasini, and in 1847 through Bosnia . In 1852 Sendtner managed the first documented ascent of the Mädelegabel in the Allgäu Alps on today's normal route .

From 1854 Sendtner was an associate professor, when Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli took office in 1857, who took over the management of the garden, a second chair was created, to which Sendtner was appointed. At the same time he also becomes the first conservator of the herbarium at the University of Munich.

Sendtner tried to clarify important basic biogeographical terms, B. the terms location , region and zone . He characterized the vegetation levels due to the vertical distribution of diagnostically important plant species. " The plants themselves join the ranks of the factors that make up the location and determine the shape of the vegetation, namely their bodies as living as well as dead. Their presence modifies the originally existing conditions. The shade and the products of decomposition intervene in the climate and humidity , Condition of the food and the soil "(Sendtner 1854, p. 439).

Otto Sendtner, together with Ferdinand Kummer, is the first to describe the colorful fescue Festuca bosniaca Kummer & Sendtner 1849.

Since 1835 he was a member of the Corps Bavaria Munich . His grave is in Munich on the Old South Cemetery .
