Dorothy Morton

Dorothy Morton (born Breitman , born September 17, 1924 in Montreal , † September 17, 2008 in Montreal) was a Canadian pianist and music teacher.

Morton was a piano student of Stanley Gardner . She then studied music theory and composition at McGill University from 1941 to 1949 with Claude Champagne , Douglas Clarke , Marvin Duchow and Violet Archer and from 1943 to 1954 piano at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec with Germaine Malépart and Isidor Philipp .

She performed at numerous concerts as well as on the radio. With Esther Master she formed the Morton Master Duo since 1955 , which u. a. Recorded works by Chopin , Infante , Schumann , Saint-Saëns and Ravel . The duo also premiered works by Canadian composers David Bach ( Sessions II , 1982) and George Fiala ( Concerto for Two Pianos ).

Since 1977 Morton has taught at McGill University; here were William Benjamin , Paul Berkowitz , Jamie Gelfand , Michel Kozlovsky , Robert Mayerovitch , Robert Silverman and Donald Steven among her students. She also taught at the Orford Art Center in the late 1970s and late 1980s . For the book Careers in Music: A Guide for Canadian Students (Oakville, 1986) she wrote the chapter on piano lessons.
