history

During one of his expeditions, researcher Gabriel Moraga reported on two poplars , which he called "Dos Palos". The "Rancho Sanjon de Santa Rita" Mexican land allotment cites "Los Dos Palos" or "The Two Trees" as a boundary marker. In 1891, the cattle farm king Henry Miller began developing a small town nearby. It was named "Dos Palos Colony" but they pronounced it with their Alsatian German accent as "Dahce Palace". This pronunciation lasted for a hundred years until the Spanish pronunciation was revived. Bernhard Marks brought forty pioneer families from Iowa and Nebraska to the west. Marks convinced Miller to establish another town two miles away on unsuitable land for agriculture. Some of the settlers moved. This new city was named Colony Center. In 1906 Dos Palos Colony was renamed South Dos Palos, and Colony Center was renamed Dos Palos. The post office was briefly misspelled as "Dospalos", but it was changed in a year. Around a dozen of the settlement's original families still live on site. Dos Palos was registered in 1935.
