Douglas Albert Munro (born October 11, 1919 in Vancouver , British Columbia , † September 27, 1942 on Guadalcanal ) is the only person in the US Coast Guard (USCG) who has awarded the Medal of Honor , the highest honor in the US armed forces got.

Munro was in the Canadian born Vancouver and 1922 citizens of the United States . He lived in South Cle Elum , Washington with his father, who worked on the Milwaukee Pacific Railroad .

He received the Medal of Honor and several other awards posthumously for his commitment to cover a retreat during the battle of the Santa Cruz Islands against Japan in World War II . 500 soldiers with equipment went into landing craft on the beach when Japanese machine guns obstructed this retreat. Douglas Albert Munro held down the machine gun fire with a twin gun, so that the evacuation was successful. He himself was killed on this mission. His grave is in Cle Elum , Washington.

As a result, two ships, one from the Coast Guard and one from the US Navy , were named after Munro.
