South Cle Elum is a small town ( town ) in Kittitas County in the US state of Washington . At the United States Census 2010 , South Cle Elum had 532 residents.

history

In 1909, the Chicago, Milwaukee & Puget Sound Railway selected Cle Elum as the larger station between the coastal stations and those of the Columbia area for future transcontinental routes. When the railroad decided to move the main line to a mile south of Cle Elum, a cadastre was set up for South Cle Elum to allow it to be recognized as a parish. In addition to the train station, facilities for maintaining the traffic systems and machines and workers' accommodation were also built. South Cle Elum was officially recognized as a parish on August 28, 1911.

2010 Census

As of the 2010 census , there were 532 residents, 235 households, and 145 families in South Cle Elum. The population density was 526.7 per km ². There were 271 housing units at an average density of 268.3 per km².

The population was 93.2% white , 0.4% African American , 1.5% Indian , 0.8% Asian , 1.5% other "races" and 2.6 % % from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 5.1% of the population.

Of the 235 households, 28.5% had children under the age of 18, 49.8% were run by married couples living together , 8.9% by single mothers and 3% by single fathers; 38.3% were non-families. 30.2% of the households were singles and 11.5% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size 2.8 people.

The median age in the city was 42.8 years. 21.2% of the population were under 18, 8% between 18 and 24, 24% between 25 and 44, 28.3% between 45 and 64 and 18.6 65 years or older. 49.6% of the population were men and 50.4% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , there were 457 residents, 185 households, and 123 families in South Cle Elum. The population density was 420.1 per km ². There were 210 housing units at an average density of 193.1 per km².

The population consisted of 94.09% whites , 1.31% Indians , 0.22% Asians , 2.41% of other "races" and 1.97% of two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 4.38% of the population.

Of the 185 households, 35.1% had children under the age of 18, 54.6% were run by married couples living together, and 7.6% by single mothers; 33.5% were non-families. 29.7% of the households were singles and 15.1% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.03. The median age in the city was 38 years. 29.5% of the population were under 18, 3.3% between 18 and 24, 30% between 25 and 44, 22.5% between 45 and 64 and 14.7 years of age or older. There were 103.1 men for every 100 women, and 96.3 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 45,833 and that of families was US $ 53,750. Men had a median income of US $ 35,625 compared to US $ 21,625 for women. The per capita income was US $ 22,375. About 8.1% of families and 6.6% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 3.9% of those under 18 and 7.6% of those over 65.

Attractions in South Cle Elum

  • South Cle Elum Yard : Originally built in 1909, this train station has been restored and now houses a museum with railway relics. The telegraph operator's workplace and his work tools are set up to give visitors an impression of the communication at the time. There is also a café equipped with a “beanery” (a kind of cheap restaurant), where railway workers used to eat their meals.
  • The Iron Horse State Park : This site, formerly the Milwaukee Railroad right of way had on, now serves as a hiking, Skiläufer- and Reiterpfad. An educational trail near the former train station shows the locations of important buildings and facilities such as the engine shed. At Exit # 84 off I-90 , follow signs to South Cle Elum; Once in the city, parking areas are signposted.
