history

Early years and industrial development

There are no exact records of the coal discovery. The selection of the Stampede Pass based on these discoveries also remains unclear. In the spring of 1886, railway engineers under Bogue and Huson explored the region with the aim of establishing a stop. The entire area of the future city, a station of the Northern Pacific Railway , was called Clealum, named after Tle-el-Lum (from the language of the Kittitas pronounced as English tlielləm) meaning "fast water", which refers to the Cle Elum River relates. In 1908 the name Clealum was changed to Cle Elum . The name was applied to the river, town, and Cle Elum Lake . Walter Reed entered into a partnership with Thomas Johnson from Ellensburg and designated about 26 ha (65 ac) as urban area. This was legally secured on July 26, 1886. Johnson owned a sawmill in Wilson Creek , Grant County, and moved that sawmill to the surrounding area. The partners Reed and Johnson founded what was undoubtedly the largest such plant at the time in central and eastern Washington ; the capacity was over 12,000 m (40,000 ft) raw wood per day. At the same time Frederick Leonhard and his brother-in-law Gerrit d'Ablaing operated a sawmill on Cooke Creek and later on Naneum ; this was also moved to the area around Cle Elum. They processed a large part of the wood for the Stampede Tunnel .

The early 20th century

Cle Elum was officially recognized as a local authority on February 12, 1902 .

Tragedy struck the area on July 16, 1908 when 2 truckloads of gunpowder inexplicably exploded while being unloaded by the Northwest Improvement Company, killing at least nine people, including miners, employees of a NIC business, and a family who lived in a tent with their children lived in the building. The explosion, which occurred about 1,200 meters from downtown Cle Elum, scattered debris and human remains and shattered windows all over town. Resident reports compared the explosion to an earthquake.

On December 15, 1910, lumberjacks for the Cascade Lumber Company went on strike near Cle Elum after the company cut wages by 5 cents a day and began charging $ 5 for food.

In 1913, the first steps were taken to investigate access for automobiles through the Cascade Range via Snoqualmie Pass . In the same year, a US $ 1.5 million levy was levied to improve and expand the state highways. The main part (US $ 590,743) went to the construction of the Sunset Highway between Spokane and Seattle. This main connection across the state was intended to directly connect Cle Elum's industrial area and the city would be the first on the journey to the east which would be reached after the crossing over the pass, so that there should be considerable benefits for the city. That same year, with the coal mines thriving, the city's second bank was created. In 1914 Cle Elum's population, which was 100 at the turn of the century, had grown to 3,000.

Major fire of 1918

Cle Elum's greatest disaster occurred on June 25, 1918 when a massive fire destroyed over 28 hectares (70 ac; about 29 blocks) and caused over US $ 500,000 in damage. A discarded cigarette residue in a pile of rubbish behind a theater was later identified as the likely cause. Thirty companies and 205 houses were destroyed, leaving more than 1,800 people homeless. As a result, aid was received from across the state. The Red Cross delivered tents from Camp Lewis to house the homeless. In addition, soldiers from Ellensburg were sent to protect the shops. Yakima and Portland, Oregon , also provided assistance to the city. Fortunately, there were no human lives to be mourned.

High insurance premiums for Cle Elum's wooden structures deterred many people from paying. One of the few buildings in downtown Cle Elum that survived the fire was the Cle Elum State Bank Building , built in 1906; it still exists today. The city center was quickly rebuilt from brick buildings and many of these buildings have survived to this day.
