The Cle Elum River is a river in Kittitas County in the US state of Washington . The 45 km long river has its source on the eastern slope of Mount Daniel in the Cascade Range and flows through the Wenatchee National Forest . On the upper reaches it flows through two small lakes - Hyas Lake and the smaller Tucquala Lake . On the way south, the Cle Elum River takes in numerous streams from side valleys, the two most important being the Waptus River and Cooper River . After about 36 km the river reaches the great Cle Elum Lake . After leaving the lake, it flows a few kilometers parallel to the Yakima River , initially separated from its valley by a range of hills ( Easton Ridge ), in a southeastern direction and finally flows into the Yakima River at the town of Cle Elum , which in turn flows into the Columbia River .

The name of the river comes from the Yakama language and means fast water . The upper reaches of the river is a popular white water area for rafting and kayaking.
