Douglas Samuel Jones , mostly cited as DS Jones, (born January 10, 1922 - November 29, 2013 ) was a British applied mathematician.

Jones studied mathematics at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University . In 1948 he became Assistant Lecturer and in 1951 Lecturer at the University of Manchester , in 1955 he was Research Professor at New York University and then again from 1955 to 1957 at the University of Manchester as Senior Lecturer. 1957 to 1964 he was a professor at the University of Keele and 1962/63 visiting professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University . From 1965 to 1992 he was Ivory Professor of Mathematics at the University of Dundee , where he expanded in particular numerical analysis (with Andrew Ronald Mitchell, who was appointed to a newly founded chair in 1967 ).

He was particularly concerned with the applications of analysis to electromagnetism and vibrations.

He is an honorary doctor of the University of Strathclyde (D.Sc.) and received the Naylor Prize in 1987 . In 1982 he received the van der Pol gold medal from the International Union of Radio Science. He is a member of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh , whose Keith Medal he received in 1974.

From 1964 to 2003 he was co-editor of the IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics, 1977 to 2002 of Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, 1977 to 2002 of Methods and Applications of Analysis, since 1992 of the Journal of Engineering Mathematics and since 1997 of Communications in Applied Analysis.
