BMW Sailing Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BMW Sailing Cup was the largest amateur regatta series in the world. BMW organized the Cup for the first time in 2006, the boat type Skippi 650 was sailed . Only a year later there was an independent, stand-alone series of events. For this purpose boats of the type Bénéteau First Class 7.5 were used, later the J80 followed . In the following year the international competition was held, in which different countries take part. The first international final took place in April 2007 in Valencia . At the beginning of 2014, BMW stopped the event.

Competition mode

2006

In 2006 the Sailing Cup was integrated into other major events. These were the Kieler Woche , the Rund um den Bodensee in Lindau, the Tiroux and Waldmüller Cup in Schwerin , the championship of the champions on the Alster and the Berlin Match Race . The German final took place during the latter event, where the winner qualified for the international final.

2007

This year there was an independent, stand-alone series of events. Boats of the type Bénéteau First Class 7.5 with four crew members were used for this. The event lasted three days, with Friday morning being available for training after the team was assigned. Then the prelims began. There were three qualifying runs for the semi-finals on Saturday. On Sunday the runner's up was driven, with which the last participants for the semi-finals were determined. Semi-finals and finals followed.

2008 to 2009

The competition mode remained the same as in 2007, however, J80 regatta boats provided by BMW were sailed afterwards. These boats are 8 m long, weigh 1.5 t and have a 31.4 m² sail area and a 65 m² gennaker .

2010 to 2012

From 2010 the event was shortened to two days. Due to the fact that boats with a crew of five will be driven in the international finals, the crew has also been increased to five in Germany.

2013

From 2013 the evaluation mode was changed. All points achieved in the individual heats were added according to a high-point system. After a maximum of 15 races with six boats each, the six teams with the highest points started in three finals, in which the first two counted once, but the last two counted. The team with the highest score was the winner.

participation

Any adult with a sailing license or with enough experience could participate.

International final

The international decision always takes place in the year following the German final, for the first time in April 2007 in Valencia. The boats are manned by five people. The national competitions in the participating countries are held with different types of boats. Germany (boat type: Skippi 650), Spain (boat type: Tom 28), Great Britain (boat type: Sunfast 37), Denmark (boat type: Match28.dk), Austria (boat type: Salona 37 and cruising yachts with spinnaker) and Malta ( Boat type: sailing boats between 25 and 50 ft with 7–9 sailors on board).

In 2008, France, Italy, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates also took part in the World Championships in Dubai, while Austria no longer competed. With the necessary crew of five people, the German winning boat was complemented by the helmsman of the second-placed ship in the Germany finals, Ingo Ehrlicher.

In 2012 Italy, Germany, New Zealand, Austria, Portugal and Romania took part in the finals.

In 2013 Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Germany, Romania and Austria took part in the final.
