history
In 1892, the explorer Bruni D'Entrecasteaux reached southern Tasmania after his ships had drifted off course due to unfavorable winds. D'Entrecasteaux and his crew spent a few weeks in Recherche Bay repairing their ships. During this time they mapped Port Esperence, now Dover, and named it after one of the expedition ships.
After Tasmania was settled, a prison camp was set up in Dover. Today the only visible evidence from that time is the Commandant's Office .
From the 1850s Dover grew as a logging town, from here the Huon Pine was shipped all over the world. Today the place lives mainly from the fish industry and fruit growing.
